What Star Wars Taught Me About Internet Marketing
With the recent announcement of Star Wars Episode VII, I immediately remembered a classic scene from the 1977 original. Imperial Fighters are chasing down the Millenium Falcon with Han Solo at the helm. He's preparing for a jump to light speed, and here's the dialogue:
Han Solo: "Stay sharp. There's two more coming in. They're gonna try and cut us off."
Luke: "Why don't you outrun them? I thought you said this thing was fast!"
Han Solo: "Watch your mouth, kid, or you're gonna find yourself floating home! We'll be safe enough once we make the jump to hyperspace. Besides, I know a few maneuvers. We'll lose 'em."
[The ship shudders as an explosion flashes outside the window.]
Han Solo: "Here's where the fun begins."
Obi-Wan: "How long before you can make the jump to light speed?"
Han Solo: "It'll take a few moments to get the coordinates from the navi-computer."
[The ship begins to rock violently as lasers hit it.]
Luke: "Are you kidding? At the rate they're gaining...?"
Han Solo: "Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations, we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova, and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?"
Luke: [Notices a flashing light] "... What's that flashing?"
Han Solo: [Slaps Luke's hand away] "We're losing a deflector shield. Go strap yourselves in. I'm going to make the jump to light speed."
As an Internet marketer and Infusionsoft consultant, what I like most about this scene is Solo's calm demeanor. Despite the chaos with Luke, Obi-wan and Princess Leah in a panic, he keeps his cool. He runs down his checklist; barks orders to his co-pilot (the big Chewbacca); takes careful steps with the navigation system; saves his ship, crew and passengers from disaster; and quips his sarcastic remarks along the way, making it look easy.
When you're in the web business and have to juggle all the details required to provide consistent, high-quality service, it's easy to get out of control. However, working in a fast-paced, stressful environment like this doesn't mean you have to be high-strung to thrive. In fact, I've found that our calm, cool and collected style is one of the main reasons our clients like working with us.
I have a Master's Degree in computer science and a very even-keeled temperament. I've always been very disciplined with my studies, work, career and life in general. Because I'm highly structured and organized, I've been able to face difficult, complicated and stressful situations with a clear head. A past boss even called me "flippant"—yes that's the word he used— because I didn't appear to be concerned or fazed while under stress.
What he didn't know is that my unemotional demeanor was intentional. I've learned to adjust my approach so I can get the job done right while keeping a level head. Although it was disconcerting for my boss at the time, I've found that my clients now appreciate this trait and often choose to partner with us because of it.
My team and I work well even in difficult situations. In addition to Internet marketing expertise, we offer structure, organization, best practices, an entrepreneurial spirit, enthusiasm and raw passion to ever project.
By complementing our clients' creativity and innovation with my team's knowledge, structure and stability, we're able to work together to take their ship from stationery to light speed.
That's our mission, and it's one we take very seriously.
